As with anything else in the property, your carpet will eventually require replacing if and when it has come to the end of its lifespan. Depending on the quality and material of your flooring, you should expect to replace your carpet roughly every five to 15 years.
Several factors must be taken into consideration, such as the amount of traffic the carpet usually sees, if children and/or animals normally walk across the surface, and how often has it been cleaned. All this plays a role in how long you can expect your flooring to last before a carpet replacement is required, as well as the type of carpet you invest in.
The room in which the carpet is laid can have a great bearing on how long you should expect it to last. For example, if the carpet has been laid in a room where people often walk across it (such as in an office or living room), you should expect to see signs of deterioration appear sooner than if the same carpet was laid in areas with less traffic (such as in a spare room).
This means that for areas of the property where people are most likely to be, you need to invest in higher quality, more durable carpeting solutions. Nylon carpets in these instances are by far the most popular choice as they are durable, resilient, and easy to maintain.
If you choose to invest in a nylon flooring, you can expect to get at least a decade’s worth of life out of it before you will have to consider a carpet replacement. It is also important to keep in consideration that nylon carpets in the modern day are nothing like those from the past, with premium fibres now used that make this solution much more than an economy wear-resistant option.
Now, premium nylon carpets are manufactured to be just as soft as wool as well as being non-absorbent. On top of this, most modern nylon carpets can also be recycled once you have finished with them, making this a thoroughly ecological carpet of choice.
Triexta is a relatively new type of carpet fibre which is proving to be very popular, although it is still too early to say whether it matches up as a suitable alternative to nylon in a durability sense. What we do know about this soft carpet, which is also known under the names of Sorona, SmartStrand, or PTT, is that it possesses incredibly stain-resistant properties – so much so that even red wine and coffee can easily be cleaned off without lingering stains.
Needless to say, that makes triexta a fantastic choice for areas of high traffic; however, it does come at a premium and is considerably more expensive than the standard nylon option. If your budget can accommodate triexta, we suspect this would prove to be a wise investment which could save you money in carpet cleaning and replacements in the future.
Let’s face it, you know when it is time to rip up the old carpet and replace it with something new. When the floor is riddled in stain, obvious signs of wear and tear are apparent and other defects rear their heads, there are only so many times you can run a carpet cleaner over the top of it or conveniently place your furniture to hide it.
While issues such as stains, wear and tear (such as rips and matting) and unpleasant odours emanating from the carpet are giveaways, other issues that you may not immediately notice include:
The padding underneath the carpet is what makes the flooring soft and comfortable to walk on, as well as working to keep the room quiet without the distraction of loud footprints as can be the case with hard flooring. However, padding, like the fibres it supports, will deteriorate and wrinkle over time as it endures more and more traffic. This is why on an old carpet you can feel as though the floor is uneven. Additionally, while spills can be cleaned up to avoid stains appearing on the carpet, they will absorb into the padding and are unlikely to be picked up by a carpet cleaner. Over time, this can become very dirty.
The longer a carpet remains, the more it retains and absorbs. If you are feeling as though you are displaying allergy symptoms such as coughing and sneezing in one area more than another, it could be due to an old carpet. Older carpets catch and retain allergens within the fibres which may be the reason why allergies flare-up.
Finally, you may not notice the colour of your carpet fade over time. Only when you compare with a new carpet tile or move a piece of furniture that has been in the same spot for years might you notice the difference in shade. A professional carpet cleaner may be able to restore your carpet to its former glory, or as close to it as possible, but even the best-maintained carpets will show signs of fading and that is when it is time for a replacement.
